“Stop the scroll.”

There’s a good chance you’ve heard those three words if you work in marketing or spend any amount of time on social media. But how do you create content that actually gets someone to stop in the middle of endless doomscrolling? The challenge is bigger than ever.

According to DataReportal’s 2026 Global Overview Report, social media users spend nearly 18 hours each week on social platforms, which equates to a full waking day. The average user can see anywhere from 1,000 to 5,000 pieces of content every day, yet they’ll only engage with a handful of them. As you can imagine, the fight for attention has never been more competitive.

So how do you stand out in a sea of TikTok dances, fleeting trends, and the rapid rise of generative AI? And where does your business fit into the mix? Getting creative and thinking outside the box can break the mold and lead to more engaging content.

With billions of social media users, the opportunity is there for every brand to find its place. There’s a corner of the internet where your business can build a community, but it starts by focusing on the people who genuinely care about what you do instead of trying to appeal to everyone.

One of the biggest mistakes businesses make on social media is approaching every post like an advertisement. Creators don’t.

They understand that people use social media to be entertained, inspired, educated, or simply kept in the loop. The brands that consistently perform well have learned this lesson. They share stories people actually want to consume first, then let their business goals follow.

But that doesn’t mean sales don’t matter. It just means value comes first.

Before you even write a caption, reframe your thinking. Instead of asking, “What do we want to promote?” ask, “What does our audience want to see?”

Social media users don’t want to be sold to every time they open an app, with many becoming frustrated by the number of ads in their feeds. Users want posts that teach them something, give them a behind-the-scenes look, make them laugh, and maybe most importantly, help them stay informed.

Before publishing anything, ask yourself three questions:

  • Does this bring value to my audience?
  • Does it represent my business well?
  • Does it reinforce our business goals?

If you answered “no” to the first question, the other two become increasingly harder to accomplish.

The best-performing posts start by understanding your audience. When you lead with value instead of promotion, you build trust, earn attention, and create something people actually want to engage with.

Every business has stories worth telling, and it’s easy to default to announcements or company news because they resonate internally. The reality is that your audience doesn’t always have the same emotional connection to your business as you do.

Show them why they should care by bringing them into your world.

Highlight the people behind your company, celebrate customer successes, and share lessons learned along the way. Your employees are your best ambassadors, so let them help tell your story.

You don’t need a production crew or a massive marketing budget to create engaging content. Start simple, experiment often, and keep these tips in mind.

Your smartphone is your best tool

You don’t need expensive equipment to create great content. Today’s smartphones capture incredible photos and videos, and features like Portrait mode can instantly elevate your visuals. Focus on natural lighting and simple shots to create a strong starting point.

Don’t overthink it

Authentic content often outperforms overproduced content. Don’t let perfection stop you from posting. Less polished posts can feel more genuine, helping your audience connect with the people behind your brand and build trust over time.

Study your own habits

Think about the posts you engage with every day. What made you stop scrolling? Was it the hook, the visuals, or the emotion? The best inspiration often comes from understanding why you engage with content yourself.

Have fun with it

Try a meme. Jump on a trend. Do the dance if it fits your brand. Experiment with different formats and ideas. Just make sure it’s intentional and authentic to your tone of voice.

Test, learn, and repeat

Not every post will be a success, but every experiment teaches you something. The more you test, the better you’ll understand what your audience wants.

Before you hit publish, ask yourself one final question: Would I stop scrolling for this?

If the answer is yes, you’re on the right track.

There isn’t a single formula for great content and engagement. But shifting your mindset can help the creation process evolve organically. Stay curious, keep experimenting, and don’t be afraid to try something new. The more you create with your audience in mind, the more naturally you’ll create content that’s worth stopping for.

Your audience is already scrolling. Give them a reason to stop.
